Music videos demonstrate certain genre characteristics, such as rock groups often have stage performances. Hip hop do hand motions and Rap performances normally have lots of thick gold chains ect. and act "Gangsta" 

There's often a relationship between lyrics and visuals and also a  relationship between music and visuals. 

Due to the demands of the record label the lead singer/ performer is often shown a lot on camera. This is to help promote an sell the band turning the singer into a kind of idol or ideal.

The artist may develop a style or iconography that recur's across their work 

There is frequent reference to the notion of ‘looking’ (screens within screens, filming, cameras) and particularly voyeuristic (pleasure through looking) treatment of the female body.


 There are often inter-textual references – mostly to film, television and popular culture to draw in the audience an entice them into watching the film or downloading the music because the two relate thus turning over a larger profit.
