Segregation exists throughout the whole of society, appearing in both overpopulated, and sparse environments; examples including African tribe rivalry comparable to modern street gangs found in many cities. Many anthropologists and psychologists believe this to be nested in basic human reason, with even infantile examples of xenophobia and innate grouping benefiting early survival.
The groups or tribes as they have been labelled by social youth, all tend to study groups such as UK-Tribes. Tribes have been created through socialization and are a direct result of the youths search for a purpose.
In
a way they can be seen as cult or fanatic groups as they are defined by characteristics
and normally led by a ‘trend setter’, these have been known to be musicians who break the
previous musical trends. Significant figured exist of this such as 'the
rockers' in 1950, followed by Elvis, Bill Haley and various
others.
In the past the birth of a new trend typically began the decline of another, however our post-modern society has made this a thing of the past. The music industry has been divided
into different categories and musical genres, with each of these attracting different social norms and target followers. This creation of trends and tribes is normally used by the music industry to increase their profit margins; monopolizing a larger audience insinuated individuality.
An example of which would be the 'emotionalists' ['emos']. A trend born in
1980 as mix a between hardcore punk and rock. This is a category defined
by long black hair on men, they typically have a skinny physique and feminine features. The music 'scene' also dictates many to wear a combination of make-up and skinny jeans. Stereotypically they will listen to heavy, scream vocalised music such as
Black Veil Brides & Escape The Fate.
The
Birth of new identities is happening every day with each new artist and new
trend of music to follow such as indie kids. Indies are a group who follow typically alternative music.
