Concept video study

Concept music videos unlike Narrative or Performance cover a variety of areas. This covers  anything which is specifically out of the norm or, surreal. Music videos in this genre don't Always relate to the song in visuals or lyrics.

As it's such a broad genre there's have been a lot of interpretations of videos it's basically a loose net covering the videos which don't fit into any other area. As artist / director normally running with an idea or (concept). Concept music videos however still follow most of Goodwins music video principles.

A good Concept music video is likely to keep the audience entertained this is due to the main reason behind a music video is to give an experience.

A good example of this would be Talking heads - Once in a lifetime.  A music video from the 80's/90's the time when music videos were still new and fresh. Due to this directors were still playing with the structure and ideas behind a music video. This video helped push the boundaries of what is a music video with it's artistic base.

In this video Peter Gabriel  'Dances around like a demented marionette' In a bold yet was inspired by epileptic fits. This was a piece of physical or performance art meant not to sell the song but to give the audiences an experience. The video broke new ground when it was exhibited at the New York museum of modern art and finally worked it's way up to 91 in the charts for most influential american music of all time.

Another example of a Concept music video is Peter Gabriel's Sledge Hammer. This video is a classic example of A concept video in which the idea was originally linked to the video; however as the video progresses these links are whittled down as they have run with a Good idea.
Although this video is also is based around sex as it's concept or as the guardian phrases it. "1986 the year that Peter Gabriel Invented sex or at least Animated Musical Innuendo".

This video however still follows Goodwins principles such as cutting to the beat and Various images of the artist. Which are displayed for consumer purposes.

My final video Ballad of Black Mesa has no narrative or meaning it is solidly concept displaying images only from games with no original footage. It also has no specificity genre characteristics although the only times when singing is displayed you can see the singer; Or in this case the character where the sample was taken from.

The music in the song is made up completely of samples from popular games weapon noises. an because of this it's hard to solidly define the video as a music video. It dose however have both a rhythm and beat both of which give it the undeniable characteristic's of a song.

Concept Traits

  1.  Use of lots of symbols to build up meaning eg. graveyard…death
  2. Lots of use of montage -lots of images to create meaning sometimes often contradictory
  3. Lighting often used to suggest mood
  4.  Fast paced - often only a few seconds per shot to build up meanings
  5.  Pictures can support the lyrics but more often does contradict the lyrics
  6.  Very experimental in the use of camera and editing techniques
  7.  Often certain themes are explored by certain genres
  8.  Non narrative – no story
