Performance based music videos are the original format for music videos. they often contain shots of the artist performing. On a live stage performance focusing on shots of the artist and audience. They also can be showing the artist in life like situations Eg. getting ready for a performance, talking with friends, having fun in a realistic circumstance.
Performance Music videos also display a lot of close up's of the artist. Goodwin's principles fit in best with performance based music videos. As the videos shows a lot of shots of the leading vocalist . The band is also ranked in order of cuteness as to how much air time they get in the video; Such as the keyboardist who receives almost no camera shots.
Bon-jovi 'You Give Love A Bad Name'
Visual style, each band normally has it's own visual style and follows this throughout their music videos. This can be seen through specific props, make-up,clothing, types of images and actions. An example of this is glam-rock, a visual style of rock created in the 80's. This style of rock blurred the gender lines with the use of makeup and tight jeans on men. displaying them in an effeminate way, An example of this is the band Bon-Jovi across their music videos such as in 'You Give Love A Bad Name'
U2- 'Where the Streets Have No Names'
Often in narrative music videos the artist can appear performing in a unfamiliar place. An such as in U2's 'Where The Streets Have No Names' which was performed on top of a roof in a well known american ghetto. This video follows the conventions of a rock video however breaks the set principles; going into an area which is not associated with rock.
Sinead O' Conner Nothing compares 2 U
This music video completely breaks performance the set principles for based music videos. It dose this by removing all the factors that define a music video leaving only the singer . This minimalistic style of music video is completely the opposite of the other videos i have analyzed. As it removes the audience fast cutting and editing and even the background forcing the viewer to concentrate on the lip syncing /singing.
As this video go's against the nature of a typical performance music video it can be seen as revolutionary. As it challenges stereotypical performance type videos by not giving into voyeurism, Or displaying any type of video which distracts from the song. This is done so we can focus on the music more as O' Conner is singing a song about her mother and this video represents her strength in emotions towards her.
